Marcotte Nets Another Win

Eric Marcotte handily secured his second Pro 1-2 crit win of the 2009 season for Bicycle Haüs Racing. After a long hour of aggressive racing by the Bicycle Haüs team, Marcotte slipped off the front in a group of four that held it to the finish.

Although we missed the "race" that started at Central and Camelback, Bicycle Haüs saw a good turnout for the annual Thanksgiving day ride up South Mountain. If you look close you just might see the new "Belgium-style" 2008 Bicycle Haüs Racing kit on it's maiden ride.

Just a Base Ride Up Humboldt

Sunday morning saw Bicycle Haüs Racing choosing a nice easy base ride up Humboldt. Due to El Tour participants out of town and other notable abscesses including Steve "I am Humboldt" Stuart 6 riders were at the start. After a short leash pulled J.T. home on Legend Trail. The rest of the group made their way to Seven Springs and on to the dirt. After a Kirkwood flat, Brick "I don't work on Sundays except today" had to turn and head for home leaving Alexander, Butkiewicz, Dolman and Kirkwood to meet the challenge of the final climb. Next up the Thanksgiving Day South Mountain Adventure.

Bicycle Haüs Racing was represented at the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festivel this past weekend. Who says we don't travel to race, all the way to Northern Wisconsin none the less. Shawn Brick, Kevin Kirkwood and Kale Keltz made the trip with Brick bringing home the bragging rights and Keltz picking up the bill.

For those of you who may have missed the comment posted by Mr. Reid on the last post I thought it was worthy of a blog entry by itself so I turn it over to Dave Reid.

On Friday 6/1 I left work early in anticipation of an excellent road trip to CA with Greg Hritzo. Little did I know how it would end up.
We drove over to Santa Barbara and did the local group ride (recommended by Tom Archer) Saturday morning. Good thing we got there a bit early because the “9:00” ride started at 8:00.
After the ride (and getting spanked on the climb by Lindsay Blount) and a shower, we drove down to Temecula for a Collective Soul concert, the final act of the wine and balloon festival. If traffic hadn’t been so bad, we would have been able to see Survivor play earlier. As it was, we were still able to hear the end of “Eye of the Tiger”. Thanks to some pretty aggressive maneuvering by Greg we were able to get out of the parking lot after about an hour and hit the road to our next stop, San Diego, to visit with Greg’s high school pal Brad.
Sunday morning started with a casual ride in San Diego. Greg and I did our best to get lost and had to eventually ask for directions to get us back to Brad’s. On our ride back Greg got a call from Brian Lemke. He passed the phone to me and Brian began telling me about the call he just received from Steve Stuart and a story about the identification and subsequent pursuit and capture of the individual in possession of my bike that had been stolen 2 months ago (remember, innocent until proven guilty). We got back to Brad’s and after talking to Brian again, I immediately called Steve for more details. I drove home Sunday night with a smile on my face the whole way, imagining the surprise of this guy when he couldn’t out pedal the Camelback Cycling Club (so the rumors that you guys have all hung up your bikes and have been sitting on the couch the last month are untrue). I could see Steve Stuart trying to reason with the guy and then the glint in everyone else’s eyes when they realized that an urban street crit was about to unfold with roller derby rules (instead of kill the guy with the ball, it was kill the guy with the stolen bike). This event was the icing on the cake of a great California road trip.

Landis has since contacted Trek and confirmed that the serial number was indeed a team bike allocated to Tempe Landis. The bike is currently in possession of the Tempe police department and is being held as stolen property. I do not think the bike will be released until the case is closed (a case # still needs to be assigned). I will update as more information unfolds.

Rumor has it that the Camelback Cycling Club riders are now honorary members of the Tempe bike patrol! Thanks for the help.

During a nice leisurely Sunday ride on the way back from South Mountain Bicycle Haüs Racing was just riding along when the keen eyes of Mr. Stuart launched the machinery of civic duty into action. A young man in street clothes was riding Mr. Reid's stolen Trek OCLV. Never mind the seat slammed to the top tube or the high tops with clip-less pedals, that is just the way the suspect rolls. The ensuing pursuit saw the suspect slamming over curbs and riding across University without even pausing for cars. We may want to consider signing him for next year since he almost managed to shake everyone except for a very persistent Mr. Kirkwood who used some aggressive crit bumping techniques to finally convince the young suspect to stop. Tempe's finest showed up quickly to take order of the situation. We will have to keep you updated on the final result but apparently there is a guy named Carlos in Guadalupe who will sell you a full OCLV for $500.

Cyclo de Mayo Crit

Bicycle Haüs Racing turned in a solid performance at the Cycle de Mayo 30+ Crit on Sunday with a 2nd, 4th and 5th by Butkiewicz, Kirkwood and Keltz respectively. This course was of special note since turn two was right in front of the Bicycle Haüs. The Pro 1,2 race saw Kirkwood donate some skin to the pavement and Keltz donate some Bicycle Haüs cash in impromptu primes.

La Vuelta de Bisbee

After 3 days and 4 hard fought stages Bicycle Haüs Racing placed 2 riders in the top 10 for the final GC with Cody Hall in 8th and Kevin Kirkwood in 10th. A full squad with Arnold, Brick, Butkiewicz, Hall, Keltz, Kirkwood, Sephia and Williams rolled into town for the prologue of the Masters event. Hall and Kirkwood positioned themselves well for a GC run finishing 5th and 12th respectively in the uphill Prologue. Stage 1 Saturday morning saw attacks from the gun with several hard sections of gutter riding due to the heavy winds. The early efforts eliminated the possibility of a Bicycle Haüs train at the finish but Hall and Kirkwood were again able to finish at the front in 6th and 10th. Saturday afternoon saw the threat of thunderstorms as the wind continued to blow for the Stage 2 TT. Kirkwood turned in the TT of his life cracking the top 10 at 9th only 30 seconds down. He was overheard stating afterwards, "Well I guess I can TT". Hall minimized the GC damage rolling in at 19th. Stage 4 on Sunday again saw animated riding from the start, but with the final climbs left to sort things out no breaks stayed away. Hall finished 10th and Kirkwood 16th on the day to preserve top 10 in the GC. While Sephia rolled in at 11th after helping to pace the team leaders through the final climbs.

Bicycle Haus Women's Team Makes Strong Showing at TBC

A Hot Weekend of Racing Action

This past weekend saw two unseasonably hot days of racing action. Saturday was the Scottsdale Grand Prix with Bicycle Haus Racing well represented. Jeremy Bounds pulled out a 4th place in the Pro 1,2 with Kirkwood in 9th. In the Pro 1,2 women Marisa Russel was 2nd for the debut of the Bicycle Haus women's team. In the Cat 2 race Kale Keltz finished in the money at 5th while in the Masters Kyle Butkiewicz was 5th in the 30+ and Pat Liu was 2nd in the 40+. Of special note was J.T.'s season debut! Sunday saw the Hungry Dog Crit with Cody Hall pulling down a 5th in the Pro 1,2 and Butkiewicz finishing 3rd, our composite team member Chris Doig 4th and Jay Woller 5th in the Masters 30+.

Bicycle Haüs Racing Announces Women's Team

Bicycle Haüs Racing is pleased to announce the formation of an elite women's team for 2007. Please join me in welcoming Sherri Bajer, Mary Hall, Marisa Russel and Maggie Williams. Although the new kits will not arrive until May, the team will be making their debut at the Scottsdale Grand Prix on Saturday. The impact of this team is immediately noted with Marisa who is leading the AZ Copper Cup points standings for the senior women. Early indications are extremely positive suggesting we may have to turn sponsors away next year.

yo, dan-o reporting on the copper classic. those three
days are for the hard men for sure, the tt was a 5min
or less effort with a short 18% kick and a steady 3-5%
to the finish. leave the lungs on the pavement and
eyesight is like looking through a paper towel tube.
the crit was rt. turn, 18+% for a block, rest a block
and lft turn 18% a block, rt. and down hill recover,
another rt. to the finish straight and back into a
head wind. half the field of 60 or so was pulled in
the firs t thirty minutes. today was an out and back,
tail wind out. first climb was 6-7% x four mi with a
little rest in between and 6mi down the other side at
7%. coming back was like towing three of your mates on
ropes. ophier lasted a few laps yesterday mostly due
to virtually no warm up and today he stayed with the
peloton. i was able to provide some refreshments at
the last feed for him just before the big climb back.
i drove to the top to watch the detonation and either
missed him in the much smaller main group or he got a
ride to the finish. i handed out what gu and water i
had left up there so who knows. anyway, that road is
perfect out there and you can take it to the beeline
highway. i think some time we should have a haus ride
where we get dropped in globe and get picked up where
the 188 and beeline meet. it would be a great team
gettogether/ride.maybe go as far as all the way to
shea and make that the pick up point. c-ya.

Sun Devil Crit

Bicycle Haüs Racing had a great turnout Sunday at the Sun Devil Crit. A full squad lined up for the 30+ race which saw attacks from the gun. Early in the race Hall and Butkiewicz got in a 4 man break that managed to lap the field 20 minutes in. During that time Woller was able to sit on a second move and pick up a number of primes along the way including possibly the best award of the day, a gift certificate to the Orange Table. With 2 laps to go, Woller took Butkiewicz off the front with a move that died just short of the last corner. As Rusty "our at the back reporter" pointed out it would have been great if Woller could have gone "twice as hard for twice as long". Hall got gapped at the last corner and was making a charge at the line for the win that just came up short. Final results, 2nd and 4th for Bicycle Haüs Racing.

The Pro 1,2 field saw Bicycle Haüs Racing also in the action. Early on Kirkwood got in a 5 man break that managed to get 25 seconds on the field. After a crash took the break down to 3, the whole field came back together. Bounds threw down a great sprint at the end for 2nd.

After a long weekend of racing, we all settle back in to are daily routines. Of course if you work at Bicycle Haüs you can justify taking the week off to watch the Tour of California as "work related". I think they even have made some contacts for Rusty who still has a year or two to get signed.

Valley of the Sun Stage Race

Bicycle Haüs Racing wasted no time finding their form at the first stage race of the year. A successful break saw Butkiewicz and Keltz finish 1st and 3rd in the 30+ road race setting them up to go on and finish 1st and 3rd in the general classification. The team remained active throughout the weekend with Kirkwood finding the podium with a 2nd place finish in the criterium.

KOG/ANIMAL RESCUE

After Kale Keltz rode away on the KOG, we were able to give this stuffed gorilla a second lease on life. Dave Reed who seemed to take a special liking to him volunteered to give him a new home. Landis just may have a new team mascot.

Swiss Crit

Even with the inclement weather, Bicycle Haüs Racing had a good turnout for the Swiss Crit and wasted no time finding the podium at the season opener. Kevin Kirkwood 3rd, Kyle Butkiewicz 2nd Masters 35+.
Latter in the day with snow flurries falling at the start the team had a solid turnout for the Pro 1,2 event with Kirkwood and Jeremy Bounds posting top 10 finishes, 7th and 8th respectively.
